Postoperative Pain

There are over 80 million surgeries performed in the USA alone each year, most patients experience pain after their surgery and over 80% of these report pain that is moderate, severe, or extreme. Similar figures exist for all developed countries and with an aging population, they are set to increase substantially.

The under- management of postoperative has created today a significant as yet unmet need for safe, cost-effective and reliable medications[4].

The Cost of Poorly Managed Postoperative Pain

In a large retrospective study of patients undergoing same-day surgery, pain was the most commonly reported reason for return to hospital, occurring in 36% of patients. Mean charges for patients with readmission due to pain were almost $2000 per visit adding a considerable burden to the cost of care[1]
